I wanted to stay away from the holiday traffic, so I decided to work from home. We started pair-programming. Skype is a great VOIP tool. We did not use any headset; built-in microphones in our laptops were sufficient.
I can say, I am happy with the overall experience.
We both were expecting phone calls. Whenever, any one of us, recieved a phone call, we put Skype’s microphone on mute. Colin had to restart VNC to adjust the screen resolution size so that he could see my desktop clearly. My WiFI connection dropped once and we lost connection. Instead of using index cards, we used the TODO task list within Eclipse.
Only thing I missed about this experience was the lack of facial expressions, reactions etc. I am going to get a set of digicams for Laptops to see if that helps. Even though, it was a good experience, I feel it is more productive to be next to your partner, while paring.
