Personas really help

November 15th, 2004 by gunjandoshi

I am currently helping a client in NYC on a wireless Java\ Extreme programming project. We were supposed to start with release planning today. However, I asked them to create some personas, before doing the release planning. We spent almost two hours to create some interesting personas. It was time very well spent as the customers kept saying “I am loving this”, “Now I see where we are going” etc.

We focused on age, habbits, skills, behavior, and most importantly the end goals of the personas. At the end, we also got some pictures for each of the personas. We also added whether the persona was phone savvy and techno savvy. The customers came up with six personas and we drilled down to three most important ones for our application.

My experience has been that very detailed personas are seldom used. I narrowed it to the minimum, so that all the three personas with their pictures and description fit on a single page. Tommorrow we will use the personas in our release planning.

In the end, the customers were thrilled with the experience of creating personas.
